Mixed-Use

Studio Gang commissioned to design its first Canadian building

March 21, 2017

Studio Gang is set to make its first mark in the Great White North as Slate Asset Management has selected the Chicago- and New York-based firm to design a mixed-use tower in Toronto.

Later this spring, Studio Gang will work with Slate to host a public consultation to gather community input for the building. Consisting primarily of rental units, the final structure will also provide ground level retail space.

The design for the new tower has not been finalized, but some decisions have already been made. “It’s not going to be a typical all-glass tower,” says Brandon Donnelly, Vice President of Development at Slate Asset Management, in a release. “We want to push boundaries in terms of sustainability and building efficiency, which means we are thinking carefully about the building envelope and its materials.”

The new tower is part of a broader scheme by Slate to revitalize and reimagine the Yonge + St. Claire neighborhood through the use of public art, innovative design, vibrant streetscapes, and open spaces.
