CENTRIA now offers the Versacor Elite Coating System, a premium metal-coating system formulated to protect against harsh climate or environmental conditions. The system offers superior abrasion resistance as well as protection against moisture and intense sunlight, according to the manufacturer. It creates a two-mil-thick barrier coat over the metal substrate and is combined with premium PVDF topcoats. The line includes Elite PF solid-color coatings, Elite MX pearlescent coatings, and Elite AM metallic coatings. The system includes a 25-year warranty on aluminum substrates and a 20-year warranty on steel substrates against cracking, chipping, peeling, color change, and chalking. CENTRIA

2. ZERO VOCS ARE GOAL FOR NEW LINE OF GREENGUARD-APPROVED INTERIOR PAINTS

SPEEDHIDE zero is a professional line of interior latex paints designed for excellent durability, ease of application, hide, and coverage. The low-odor product makes it easier for painters to work in occupied spaces. Topcoats are anti-microbial and contain no formaldehyde, crystalline silica, ethylene glycol, or VOCs, meeting stringent environmental regulations. (Some colorants may increase the VOC level.)

The product is formulated for improved scrub, stain, and burnish resistance and comes in flat, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss finishes, as well as a compatible sealer/primer. SPEEDHIDE zero complies with stipulations of the Master Painters Institute, the MPI Institutional Low Odor/VOC category, and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools Low-Emitting Materials criteria. 3. WATER- AND DIRT-REPELLENT COATING REVIVES HOTEL AT LUXURY RESORT

The Steamboat Grand Resort, a luxury ski property near Steamboat Springs, Colo., is exposed to more than 300 days of sunshine a year, coupled with some of the state’s highest snowfall totals. After a dozen years of operations, the resort hotel was in need of a facelift. Denver Commercial Coatings applied StoCoat Lotusan, a super-hydrophobic exterior coating that produces a finish with self-cleaning properties due to its high level of water repellence.

The flat exterior wall coating, which has a microstructure based on that of the lotus leaf, is designed to offer durability and to resist soiling, mold, mildew, algae, and UV fading. The project was completed well ahead of schedule even though most of the 500,000-sf property was occupied. Sto Corp.

Depending on application conditions, the benefits of this coil coating system can include faster line speeds, quicker curing, and reduced edge blistering. The silicone polyester resin formulation is designed to deliver maximum hardness, making it suitable for metal roofing, agricultural and industrial buildings, and metal wall panels. Solar-reflective formulations are available, helping projects meet Energy Star and LEED criteria. The Valspar Corporation

5. COLOR-SELECTION SERVICE FOCUSES ON PAINTS FOR EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE MARKETS

Glidden Professional’s Functional Color & Design program is based on aspects of science that impact the design of commercial facilities. Brazil Olympics spurring green construction

Brazil's green building industry will expand in the coming years, spurred by construction of low-impact venues being built for the 2016 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee requires arenas built for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro meet international standards for low-carbon emissions and energy efficiency. This has boosted local interest in developing real estate with lower environmental impact than existing buildings. The timing couldn’t be better: the Brazilian government is just beginning its long-term infrastructure expansion program.

CityCenter’s new Harmon Hotel targeted for demolition

MGM Resorts officials want to demolish the unopened 27-story Harmon Hotel—one of the main components of its brand new $8.5 billion CityCenter development in Las Vegas. In 2008, inspectors found structural work on the Harmon didn’t match building plans submitted to the county, with construction issues focused on improperly placed steel reinforcing bar. In January 2009, MGM scrapped the building’s 200 condo units on the upper floors and stopped the tower at 27 stories, focusing on the Harmon having just 400 hotel rooms. With the Lord Norman Foster-designed building mired in litigation, construction has since been halted on the interior, and the blue-glass tower is essentially a 27-story empty shell.

Landscape architecture challenges Andrés Duany’s Congress for New Urbanism

Andrés Duany, founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, adopted the ideas, vision,  and values of the early 20th Century landscape architects/planners John Nolen and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., to launch a movement that led to more than 300 new towns, regional plans, and community revitalization project commissions for his firm. However, now that there’s a societal buyer’s remorse about New Urbanism, Duany is coming up against a movement that sees landscape architecture—not architecture—as the design medium more capable of organizing the city and enhancing the urban experience.

Just for fun: Words that architects use

If you regularly use such words as juxtaposition, folly, truncated, and articulation, you may be an architect. Architects tend to use words rarely uttered during normal conversations. In fact, 62% of all the words that come out of an architects mouth could be replaced by a simpler and more widely known word, according to this “report.” Review this list of designer words, and once you manage to work them into daily conversation, you’re on your way to becoming a bonafide architect.
