New residence hall to house 500 students at Duke University

Hollows Residence Hall is a 264,700-sf facility that will consist of two six-story buildings on Duke University’s West Campus in Durham, N.C. The two buildings will stand next to each other and be joined by a connecting portal.

Each building will be organized into nine houses that comprise 30 to 60 beds each. The houses will include suites with four single bedrooms and in-suite bathrooms, separate vanities, and kitchenette space. Common lounges, kitchens, and dedicated study rooms will also be located in each building. Some rooms will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and include space for an attendant. The suite-style rooms were designed in part from student input gathered via forums held with the university and the project’s architects.

There will also be nine rooms for resident assistants, one apartment for a graduate resident, and one apartment for a residential coordinator. In total, Hollows Residence hall will house 500 students.

The buildings’ exteriors will use a combination of the Duke Brick Blend with slate gabled roofs. The William Rawn Architects-designed project will seek LEED Silver certification. Skanska USA is currently building the project, which is expected to be completed by July 2019.
