Performance Benefits of Using Medium Density Spray Foam Insulation in Continuous Insulation Applications

Discover why Icynene closed cell spray foam insulation offers superior performance to rigid XPS foam sheathing board in continuous insulation…

Icynene

Established in 1986, Icynene Inc. provides a portfolio of innovative and responsible insulation products that contribute to a Healthier, Quieter, More Energy Efficient® and sustainable building.

Icynene®’s 100% water-blown solutions are both insulation and air barrier materials for improved air quality, reduced energy costs, and comfort in any climate*. And with HFC- and PBDE-free products made using renewable and recycled materials, it is the smart choice for homeowners, builders, architects and the environment.

Used in over 100,000 building projects, Icynene® has a proven track record for delivering high-performance solutions that give builders and remodelers a competitive advantage in the marketplace while giving architects the ability to design without compromise.

With Icynene, complex detailing is a breeze. Cathedral ceilings, steel structures, domed ceilings, arches and other unusual shapes do not impede the performance of this unique insulation and air barrier.  Icynene air-seals all wood and steel framed cavities, crevices and voids to deliver a perfect fit for walls, crawl spaces, attics, ceilings and floors.

Icynene light density spray foam products create an effective, vapor permeable air barrier that can move with the building. Being water vapor permeable, they allow moisture to diffuse through the insulation and dissipate from the building envelope.

Icynene’s medium density product has lower vapor permeability and water absorption characteristics which reduce the amount of moisture that can diffuse through the insulation. It is classified as a class III vapor diffusion retarder. The 2009 IRC and IBC allow for the use of a class III vapor diffusion retarder, as required by the codes. Check with a building code official regarding local requirements.

Icynene is ideal for sound abatement applications by reducing both airborne and flanking sound (sound transmitted through the building structure). Icynene ensures a haven of peace and quiet by completely filling and sealing every penetration such as cracks around doors, electrical outlets, and plumbing pipes within walls.

Icynene is proud to be associated with organizations and programs that are making a difference in the green building community. Some of these affiliations include the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Canadian Green Building Council (CGBC), the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB), ENERGY STAR®, Energy and Environmental Building Association (EEBA), EarthCraft® House, Building America Program from the Department of Energy (DOE) and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Icynene engages in extensive research in order to develop and perfect their products. This ensures that the Icynene Inc. will continue to deliver an array of high-performance, premium insulation solutions.
