The London architecture firm Adjaye Associates, headed by David Adjaye, unveiled designs for a new $16 million building for the Linda Pace Foundation in San Antonio, according to Architects’ Journal.
The red, angular building, named Ruby City, will display the contemporary art foundation’s 800 paintings, sculptures, installations, and videos.
Ruby City will be two stories and 14,000 sf, with 10,000 sf of exhibition space. Large windows face parks and city views.
The exterior will be covered by panels of precast concrete with glass aggregate. The facility also includes CHRISpark, a one-acre public green space, and SPACE, the Linda Pace Foundation Gallery, both of which are already open.
“When I visited San Antonio in 2007, and met with Linda, we sketched out ideas, and together, we envisioned a building that would resonate with her dream of the Ruby City,” David Adjaye said in a release by the Linda Pace Foundation. “Like a city, the design offers an organic, heuristic encounter with the Foundation’s works and my hope is that it will become a place where artists and the wider community can be inspired to realize their own dreams through a meaningful experience with contemporary art.”
Groundbreaking is scheduled for 2016, and a grand opening is slated for 2018.
