World's tallest data center opens in New York

The 32-story Verizon Building is being transformed into a mega data center.

The 32-story Verizon Building is being transformed into a mega data center.

Sabey Data Center Properties last week celebrated the completion of the first phase of an adaptive reuse project that will transform the 32-story Verizon Building in Manhattan into a data center facility. When the project is completed, it will be the world's tallest data center.

Architizer Blog's Peter Levins was at the opening ceremony (see his photos from the event). Levins says the initial phase includes some 1,000 sf of data center space and will serve the building's first tenant, the New York Genome Center. Eventually, the facility will offer more than 600,000 sf of data center space.

Sabey acquired the property in 2011. The firm worked with Callison to design and engineer the facility, which is called Integrate.Manhattan.
