THE WEEKLY SHOW HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 17, 2020

SEGMENT #1 - Breaking the rules of retail, with Jeff Gunning Sarah Holstedt, CallisonRTKL

BD+C's Robert Cassidy chats with CallisonRTKL Senior Vice President Jeff Gunning and Associate Vice President Sarah Holstedt about "rules to break" in retail design and development. One rule that needs breaking is "leave it to the experts." In today's retail setting, who are the experts? Design professionals? Developers? Or are the real retail experts the consumer who wants to engage and shape the retail environment? Gunning and Holstedt also offer advice on how real estate developers and their design teams respond to the changing face of retail amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

SEGMENT #2 - The Household Model for assisted living facility design, with Stuart Barber, AIA, LEED AP, McMillan Pazdan Smith

Stuart M. Barber, AIA, LEED AP, Associate Principal and Director of Senior Living with McMillan Pazdan Smith, talks with BD+C's David Barista about the Household Model for skilled nursing and assisted living facility design.
Barber outlines his firm's "7 Design Principles for the Household Model," which include creating a familiar and recognizable home, providing care without making it the focal point of a facility, and keeping a resident’s bed and bathroom as their private sanctuary, to be entered only with consent.

SEGMENT #3 - Designing labs to address the coronavirus and future health events, with Andres Grechi, MBH Architects

BD+C's John Caulfield sits down with Andres Grechi, Principal and Design Director with MBH Architects, to discuss the latest trends in designing lab spaces. The two focused on a new coworking life sciences incubator space that MBH recently completed for MBC Biolabs in San Carlos, Calif. They also talked about designing labs to address the coronavirus and future health events.
