George Washington University has installed the world's first walkable solar pavement, a 100-sf demonstration sidewalk, at its Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, Va., according to a report by Sourceable

The installation includes 27 slip-resistant, semi-translucent panels that are backlit to provide illumination at night. The solar panels will generate enough electricity to power the 450 LED pathway lights below the panels. The technology was developed by New York-based Onyx Solar, which offers a range of PV systems.
