Turner Completes $3 Billion of Green Buildings Nationally; $500 Million of Green Construction in California in ‘08

August 11, 2010

Turner Construction Company, the nation's leading builder of "green buildings," completed more than $500 million of green construction in the state of California and more than $3 billion nationwide during 2008. Turner's green projects in California represent a diversity of building types, including in the education, commercial, aviation and healthcare segments.

Turner has completed 80 projects that have been LEED Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). An additional 130 projects are LEED Registered. Of those, 22 of Turner's Registered projects and 9 of the firm's Certified projects are located in California. These projects are employing strategies to improve a building's performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Turner's active green projects in California during 2008 include:

Stanford University Graduate School of Business, $280 million, seeking LEED-NC Platinum Certification, Palo Alto, CA.Sacramento International Airport Terminal B, $286 million, seeking LEED-NC Certification, Sacramento.555 Mission, LEED-CS Gold Certified, San Francisco.LAUSD Valley Region High School No. 5, $102 million, seeking 34 CHPS points, Los Angeles.LAUSD Central Region High School No. 13, $116 million, seeking 42 CHPS points, Los Angeles.LAUSD Central Region High School No. 16, $90 million, 30.5 CHPS points, Los Angeles.

Turner expects client interest in Green buildings to continue. In a recent survey of commercial real estate executives, taken in 2008, Turner found that they viewed green buildings as having lower energy, operating and lifecycle costs, higher building values, asking rents and occupancy rates.

Turner is the largest builder of green building projects in the United States and has the most LEED Accredited Professionals on staff among construction management firms.

Turner has also taken steps to green its operations by adding more high mileage and hybrid vehicles to its fleet, recycling more than 75,000 tons of waste on its jobsites in 2008 and through greening its own offices as they are renovated.
