Each year, the Building Design+Construction editorial team evaluates the vast universe of new and updated products, materials, and systems for the U.S. building design and construction market. The best-of-the-best products make up our annual 75 Top Building Products report.

Products are selected based on their level of innovation and overall usefulness to the industry.

The 75 Top Building Products competition is accepting submissions from all building product manufacturers serving the U.S./Canada commercial buildings market (commercial, institutional, industrial, and multifamily buildings).

Product submissions will be evaluated by a jury of practicing architects, specifiers, engineers, and construction professionals, as well as the BD+C editorial team. The winners will be featured in the November/December 2024 issue of Building Design+Construction.

The editors are accepting new/updated products in the following categories:

ENTRY GUIDELINES:
Submissions are due August 2, 2024.
Please complete the online form to enter a product, and then email product images to dbarista@sgcmail.com.
Product manufacturers can submit up to three (3) products. There is no cost to enter.
Products MUST be new or updated within the past 15 months (so after April 2023).
Photo guidelines: The jury will accept up to five photos for each product submission (gif, jpg, jpeg, png). Ideal size: 4x5 inches at 300 dpi. Images cannot contain product logos or watermarks. Please email image(s) to dbarista@sgcmail.com.

From a bladeless rooftop wind energy system that mimics the airfoils on a race car, to a troffer light fixture with built-in continuous visible light disinfection for hospitals, to a stone wool ceiling system that recreates the look of smooth, flowing plaster ceilings, innovation is plentiful in our annual 75 Top Products report.

If those do not impress, then how about the first-ever asthma and allergy friendly-certified carpet? Or a patented ventilated door that solves the noisy laundry closet problem in multifamily units? Or the first major innovation to the common electrical box since the 1960s?

These and 69 other award-winning products make up our annual “best of the best” in new and updated building products for 2023.

HOW WE SELECTED THE WINNERS
It’s no easy task to evaluate the vast universe of new products, materials, and systems across dozens of product categories and hundreds of manufacturers each year. To start, we invited all product manufacturers serving the U.S./Canadian commercial, institutional, industrial, and multifamily buildings markets to participate in an open submission process. Entries were free, and companies could submit up to three products.

A jury of practicing professionals and the BD+C editorial team reviewed and scored the submissions, based on the following factors:

Overall potential benefit to project teams (e.g., solves a problem, installs quicker, improves the building design, speeds construction)
Usefulness to clients/owners/developers (performance, durability, design, ROI, maintenance, etc.)
Impact on building occupants (health, wellness, safety, productivity)
Overall innovation within the product category (Is it a “first of its kind?” Does it advance the product category in some way?).

More than 75 manufacturers participated in the program this year, submitting 142 products in all. In addition to the open submission process, the BD+C editorial team selected “Editors’ Picks” based on the same criteria.

In the end, the jury selected 66 products as “Judges’ Picks.” The editorial team chose nine products as “Editors’ Picks.”

HITCH can achieve effective R-values exceeding R60 for various types of wall assemblies while supporting heavy cladding loads in high wind load and seismic conditions. It can accommodate continuous exterior insulation thicknesses between one and 16 inches.

This panelized stone veneer offers wood grain characteristics inspired by the craftsmanship seen in 19th century barns, with authentic details such as nails, breaks, knots, and an aged yet contemporary look. The lightweight stone veneer is produced using a concrete mixture that’s poured into a mold and colored using mineral pigments. It’s easy to cut and handle, says the maker. Available in three colors: brown, grey, and white.

Delivering as much energy as conventional, rack-mounted solar panels without the bulky look, the shingle achieves quality performance under diffused light and shade, says the maker. It can be installed on a new or existing asphalt shingle roof.

This large-format, panelized, mortarless stone veneer solution features a mechanically fastened clip system that allows panels as large as 20x7¼ inches to be installed in any season and with no special tools or masonry skills required. The clips hold the stone off the wall, allowing it to breathe and drain for water management. True masonry corners offer a clean, seamless look. Suitable for commercial, multifamily, and residential applications.

InSpire HP, a transpired solar collector, is a metal wall panel with precision-lanced micro perforations that create solar air heating. The panel is mounted a few inches from the building’s outer wall. Solar-heated air at the surface of the panel is drawn through the perforations where it rises between the two walls and enters the building’s central ventilation system or supply fan. InSpire HP is a simple, economical solution for reducing carbon emissions and energy costs, says the maker.

Its slotted design simplifies installation, even for highly crafted arrangements, and offers enhanced energy performance. The product can be used for ceilings, paneling, siding, soffits, and decking.

Available in aluminum or steel and in dozens of color options, the Facade HL and Facade BR series architectural metal wall panels offer 11 profiles with a depth of 13/8 inches and varying widths up to 16 inches. According to the maker, the zinc products are produced using 50% less carbon dioxide (CO2) compared with traditional zinc solutions. Zinc is lightweight and offers a 100-year lifespan.

It can connect to any building management system and can work across many types of assets, such as HVAC, boilers, chillers, plug loads, condensers, and lighting operations.

Manufacturers of flexible stainless steel mesh recommend minimum tensioning to ensure the longevity of the system. GKD Tensiomesh is a patent-pending quality control device that can be installed on the system bracket to measure exact tension specifications. Hybrid VRF uses a Hybrid Branch Circuit (HBC) controller to use heat recovery for simultaneous heating and cooling while keeping indoor piping refrigerant-free. It provides the efficiency and heat recovery benefits of a VRF system with the additional comfort and control of a four-pipe chiller system by utilizing hydronic indoor units.

This bladeless rooftop wind energy system has no external moving parts and no vibration. Like airfoils on a race car, the technology captures and amplifies a building’s airflow. Needing 10% of the roof space used by solar panels, the stationary and silent Aeromine unit can generate energy at any time and in any weather. The system integrates with a building’s existing electrical and rooftop solar systems, and is up to 50% more productive than other renewable energy alternatives, says the maker.

E-Lids electrical boxes

Electrical boxes have not changed since the 1960s—until now. Conventional open-faced electrical boxes require two mobilizations to finish device installation. They also force electricians to terminate thousands of conductors on-site each year. E-lids boxes eliminate much of this work by offering a pre-assembled solution. The boxes arrive at the jobsite with conductors already connected (pigtailed) to the device, greatly speeding installation and reducing errors.

Created to simplify adding multi-location light controls without causing too much disruption or expense, radiant Easy Kit light switches allow a wired device like a switch, dimmer, or outlet to communicate with a wireless, battery-operated device such as a switch or dimmer. Each kit includes a pre-paired wired and wireless device. Installation involves replacing the existing switch, dimmer, or outlet with the wired device, and then mounting the wireless switch or dimmer to the desired wall.

By adding the ability to pre-glaze in the shop, contractors stand to benefit from greater glazing efficiencies. The system comes with versatile options like inside or outside glazing, compatibility with YKK AP’s H-series of entryways, and higher thermal performance with advanced glazing.

The Technoform SP25 is a hybrid plastic and stainless steel warm-edge spacer for insulated glass units. A matte black finish applied to the sidewall of the spacer reduces the chance of steel visibility. Designed for use in structural silicone glazing applications, the spacer surpasses the durability requirement of ASTM E2190 with a dual seal PIB/silicone sealant system.

This triple-silver low-e glass combines high visible light transmission (68%), a neutral aesthetic, and good thermal and solar performance (winter-night U-value of 0.28 and a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.28 on low-iron glass). When viewed at an angle, triple-silver low-e products can experience color shift/change. SunGuard SNX 70+ coated glass was developed to provide a neutral, slight-gray appearance so reflected color will be more consistent at any viewing angle.

Available in both single- and double-glazed options within a two-inch profile, Revolution 54 Plus offers the narrowest glass wall system on the market, says the maker. It provides good acoustic performance—achieving up to 48 STC with two layers of 12.8mm acoustic laminate glass (double glazed system)—and integrates seamlessly with generic drywall. Manufactured with low-embodied-carbon aluminum with a minimum of 75% post-consumer recycled content.

The TGProtect FR System is North America’s first full-lite, fire-rated glass door system to meet forced entry standards, according to the maker. It is tested to ASTM E2395 and HP White 5-aa10 standards, industry benchmarks for forced-entry resistance, and is available with fire ratings from 20 to 60 minutes. The swinging door and sidelites offer a close visual match to non-rated systems.

The stone wool, monolithic ceiling system is suited for flat or curved applications with direct-mount or suspended installations, and may also be used for angled and arched transitions and on sloped or vertical walls. The material naturally resists moisture, mold, and mildew.

The Petals collection consists of lightweight aluminum panels that can be shaped in organic curves that evoke the contours of plant life to add serenity to commercial spaces. Each panel can be angled to create sculptural points of interest, organized into repeating patterns, or configured to add definition to specific areas within a space. This ceiling system looks like drywall and performs like an acoustical ceiling, allowing designers to achieve a monolithic look while meeting stringent acoustic requirements.
