Sustainable formula in Barrier-1 additive inhibits mold growth

Sustainable formula in Barrier-1 additive inhibits mold growth

By Staff | August 11, 2010

Barrier-1 Admixture is a new and unique product which, when added to concrete mix, significantly inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, including the ubiquitous black mold, in humid applications. Designed for all concrete applications, Barrier-1 contains a precise blend of silicates, hydroxides and a powerful antimicrobial agent. When properly blended into the concrete mix prior to pouring, the Barrier-1 Admixture produces concrete that will not allow moisture migration or capillary action inside the slab. As an added benefit, the properties of Barrier-1 densify the concrete and increase the overall strength of the slab by an average of 14 percent. Once properly cured, the concrete is compatible with all floor coverings, adhesives and coatings. Barrier-1 president, Richard Koon, believes that the environmental implications of his product are just as important as the moisture control attributes. "In terms of sustainability, Barrier-1 Admixture contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC's) and its antibacterial biocide additive inhibits mold and bacteria growth for the life of the concrete," Koon explains. "Both of these factors can help contribute points to projects registered under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Rating System."
