Mercedes-Benz Stadium, site of Super Bowl LIII, was designed to capture enormous amounts of storm water runoff.

Home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United FC, the facility opened in August 2017 as North America’s first LEED platinum stadium. The project accumulated 88 out of a maximum 100 points, the highest LEED rating ever for a sports facility.

The venue has a capacity to store over 2 million gallons of storm water on site. A 680,000-gallon cistern captures rainwater that is used for landscape irrigation and to replenish the site’s cooling tower.

Located within the flood-prone Proctor Creek Watershed, the site includes several bioswales that were created to improve water quality and serve as an alternative to storm sewers.
