Summit Design + Build, LLC recently completed the new 12,000-sq. ft. LEED certified retail center known as Park Place in Northbrook, Ill. Â The firm also recently completed two retail build-outs within Park Place. The Equitable Group, Inc. is the owner/developer for the project.
Summit was responsible for the complete gut and renovation of the former auto repair shop which required the partial demolition of the existing building, while maintaining the integrity of the original 100 year-old structure, and significant re-grading and landscaping of the site.
Summit Design + Build was subsequently retained by Caribou Coffee to perform a 1,900 sq. ft. build-out of a full-service café featuring a custom brick fireplace and an outside patio at the northernmost end of the building. Sherwin-Williams also utilized Summit's services to complete their build-out of a 4,000 sq. ft. paint store at the southern end of the property.  An additional 5,200 sq. ft. of space, which can be divisible into two or three additional stores, is still available for lease.
Summit Design + Build's David A. Brown, project manager, and Jeff Harwood, superintendent, were responsible for the on-site construction of Park Place and the Caribou Coffee and Sherwin-Williams build-outs.
SAS Architects and Planners provided architectural services for the project. Â Jonathan Plotkin and Oliver Plotkin of Chicago-based Endurance Retail Partners LLC are the exclusive marketing agents for the property. BD+C

CityCenterâs new Harmon Hotel targeted for demolition
MGM Resorts officials want to demolish the unopened 27-story Harmon Hotelâone of the main components of its brand new $8.5 billion CityCenter development in Las Vegas. In 2008, inspectors found structural work on the Harmon didnât match building plans submitted to the county, with construction issues focused on improperly placed steel reinforcing bar. In January 2009, MGM scrapped the buildingâs 200 condo units on the upper floors and stopped the tower at 27 stories, focusing on the Harmon having just 400 hotel rooms. With the Lord Norman Foster-designed building mired in litigation, construction has since been halted on the interior, and the blue-glass tower is essentially a 27-story empty shell.

AndrĂ©s Duany, founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, adopted the ideas, vision, and values of the early 20th Century landscape architects/planners John Nolen and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., to launch a movement that led to more than 300 new towns, regional plans, and community revitalization project commissions for his firm. However, now that thereâs a societal buyerâs remorse about New Urbanism, Duany is coming up against a movement that sees landscape architectureânot architectureâas the design medium more capable of organizing the city and enhancing the urban experience.
