Austin, Texas has proposed building codes that require wider sidewalks and call for buildings to be closer to sidewalks along a 3.5-mile stretch of highway. Some believe the result will be fewer cars on the road, but more bikers and pedestrians, and that those walking by would be more likely to go into the many small, locally owned businesses on the road.
