Santiago Calatrava talks with BBC about St. Nicholas Church on Ground Zero

The church is slated to open in early 2016

By BD+C Staff | January 9, 2015

Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava sits down with BBC Magazine and talks about his design for the new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which ArchDaily reports is “the only non-secular building on the 9/11 Memorial site.”

“The church should not just be open for Greeks,” Calatrava said in the video, “it should be open for everybody. The church should be open 24 hours a day.”

Calatrava reveals that he wanted to retain the “tiny home” feel of the original church building that was destroyed with the twin towers on 9/11.

The church is slated to open in early 2016. Here’s an earlier BD+C post with more details on the project.
