The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) released an original Tall Buildings in Numbers (TBIN) research study entitled “Tall Timber: A Global Audit.”
This study examines recently completed and under-construction timber structure buildings as well as a wave of new proposals. In the past few years, there has been a worldwide wave of research, built projects, and speculative proposals using “mass timber” – engineered wood products that are just as robust as their concrete and steel counterparts, according to a CTBUH news release.
The council will convene a Tall Timber Workshop on Sunday October 29 in conjunction with the CTBUH 2017 Australia Conference to establish criteria for categorizing the wide range of construction approaches to tall timber buildings for inclusion in the official CTBUH Height Criteria and ultimate determination of the “World’s Tallest Timber Building” title.
The group aims to:
- Develop recommendations for standardized nomenclature and a common understanding of methodologies of tall-timber design and construction.
- Expand the existing CTBUH Tall Timber Working Group into an international committee.
- Produce a CTBUH Technical Guide on High-Rise Timber Construction.
