Report on large New York City buildings shows progress on energy efficiency

October 8, 2013

Buildings in New York City have been found to have a median score of 67 out of 100 in Energy Star's Portfolio Manager, an increase from 64 last year, and above the national average of 50, according to a study prepared by the Natural Resources Defense Council for the office of Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The reportlooked at energy use of multifamily units and large commercial buildings. “The point of this is to say to a store or a building owner, 'you’re using five times more energy than your peers.' That’s literally money going out the door,” says Melissa Wright, associate director of NRDC’s city energy project.
