As pressure from investors for ESG reporting mounts, owners of multifamily properties increasingly look to collect whole-building utility usage data.

For properties using electric and gas meters for individual units, comparing energy performance among their properties is difficult if not impossible. So, owners are turning to web-based platforms for reporting and comparing energy utilization among their properties.

Some owners have committed to ambitious sustainability goals such as the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark, and need accurate data to know where to make investments for energy-efficiency projects. To date, the multifamily sector has been slower than other industries to adopt new technologies for energy usage assessments.

Several startups, including Verdigris, Vutility, Redaptive, Utility API and Smappee, have developed tools to address this need.

Efforts to encourage more housing projects on California coast stall

A movement to encourage more housing projects along the California coast has stalled out in the California legislature. Earlier this year, lawmakers, with the backing of some housing activists, introduced a series of bills aimed at making it easier to build apartments and accessory dwelling units along California’s highly regulated coast.
