A new project near Copenhagen pushes the boundaries of the term "mixed use," combining a waste-to-energy plant with a ski resort. The Amagerforbrænding Energy Plant, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, will feature an incinerator wrapped in mesh, forming an artificial hill. BIG's theme of "hedonistic sustainability" suffuses this effort to turn an industrial facility into a tourist destination. The 95,000 sm facility will provide ample room for a ski slope featuring more than 1,500 m of runs, designed by German firms Topotek 1 and Man Made Land. Recycled synthetic granular material will be used instead of snow, facilitating year-round skiing. A smoke-ring generator will make use of water vapor emitted by the incinerator, creating an impressive display combined with lasers. Completion is projected for 2016.
