Progressive steel joist and metal decking design [AIA course]

Progressive steel joist and metal decking design [AIA course]

This three-part course is worth 1.0 AIA learning unit.

By New Millennium Building Systems | October 7, 2013

This three-part course takes a building owner’s perspective on the range of cost and performance improvements that are possible when using a more design-analytical and collaborative approach to steel joist and metal decking construction. Recommendations range from early project conception to project delivery and related trade integration.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize and understand ways to improve the steel construction process through progressive steel joist and metal decking design and implementation.
  • Describe key elements and challenges of joist related total-project performance including cascading costs, cost assessment and the RFI process.
  • List the fundamentals of engineering for total-project cost accountability including tonnage reduction, deeper analysis of MEP, ESFR and joist-and-decking system design and implementation practices.
  • Discuss the features and benefits of building-information modeling (BIM) based project collaboration for structural steel projects.
