The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) recognized Alfred K. Potter II, FSMPS, senior vice president with Gilbane Building Co., with the 2011 Weld Coxe Marketing Achievement Award (MAA).
The MAA is the preeminent SMPS individual honor that salutes industry professionals for exemplary achievements and contributions to the field of professional services marketing in the design and building industry. The award criterion requires that nominees demonstrate significant accomplishments in at least three of five categories: education, professional leadership, innovative programs, marketing communications, and research.
In 1982, Potter joined Gilbane Building Co.’s Mid-Atlantic Region as regional manager of business development. The next year, Potter joined SMPS in the Washington, D.C., Chapter.
Thus started his 29-year relationship with Gilbane and SMPS. His career at Gilbane has helped fuel Gilbane’s growth to one of the largest builders in the nation, with over $4 billion in construction volume and over 60 offices globally.
A leader at Gilbane, Potter became the first sales/marketing officer in the company to be elected senior vice president, and he served multiple management roles in marketing, business development, and strategy nationally.
Additionally, his leadership and hands-on innovation at SMPS have spanned chapter, regional, and national levels. Potter was instrumental in the development of the association’s well-respected business development curriculum. BD+C
