Block sizes initially were limited to a maximum perimeter of 1,750 feet, with no side of the block being longer than 500 feet.

The Tuscaloosa, Ala. City Council's proposed set of new building and design codes in the tornado recovery zone include a measure aimed at establishing pedestrian-friendly urban and retail areas.

Block sizes initially were limited to a maximum perimeter of 1,750 feet, with no side of the block being longer than 500 feet, but the limit has been enlarged to a perimeter of 2,000 feet with a maximum side of 600 feet. Tuscaloosa was devastated by a tornado in April.
