New York City’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 includes tripling the amount of solar power generated from city-owned buildings.

The city has earmarked $28 million for solar installations at 24 schools. Funds include city and state grants. The PV systems are projected to generate 6.25 MW annually, which translates into a reduction of 2,800 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions—or taking 600 cars off the road every year. The solar installations are expected save over $1.7 million in annual electricity costs for the schools.

The solar power systems will be incorporated into the school curriculum. Students will be able to track solar power generation and emission offset through real-time web portals.

With the ambitious greenhouse gas emission target in mind, New York will retrofit all city-owned buildings for energy efficiency over the next decade.
