Changes made to the design of the new Milwaukee Bucks arena, Fiserv Forum, will make the building less likely to cause bird mortality.
The Bucks and designer Populous incorporated bird-friendly features early in the design process after being urged to do so by the director of the advocacy group Bird City Wisconsin. The project is being billed as the world’s first bird-friendly sports arena.
The most obvious bird-friendly feature is the use of fritting, a thin ceramic coating on glass that provides tiny lines visible only up close to humans and signals to birds that the glass is a barrier to be avoided.
The arena has been granted a LEED bird collision deterrence credit. Milwaukee is an important flyway for migrating birds that follow the Great Lakes.
