New Federal Law Limits Amount of Formaldehyde in Wood

New Federal Law Limits Amount of Formaldehyde in Wood

September 15, 2011

President Obama signed into law legislation that limits the amount of formaldehyde in wood. The new measure will impact particle board and other composite wood products, including some types of plywood.

The law is based on a similar California law, and follows years of debate about the risks associated with formaldehyde and the ability of industry to reduce its reliance on it. Some industry observers have estimated that prices for plywood and particle board could increase from 3% to 15%.
