Nauset Construction recently completed construction of a significant renovation, addition and site improvements to The Gables at Winchester, an integrated independent and assisted living retirement community owned and operated by Five Star Senior Living of Newton, Mass.
Designed by architectural firm Levi + Wong Design Associates Inc., the 40,000 square foot project elevates the senior living experience by including a stadium-style theater, library, fitness center, and a bistro within the campus of the wooded location. The multi-million dollar project was completed in three phases over a fourteen-month period to minimize disruptions to the residents of The Gables.
The addition includes a theater/media room with state-of-the art movie equipment and sound system and fixed, stadium style seating. A new activity room with a grand main entrance was constructed featuring traditional architectural details with high end finishes.
Additional improvements included a new beauty salon, an exercise room outfitted with the latest in fitness equipment, an elegant dining room and beautifully landscaped outdoor patios with stone wall seats, blue stone in-lays and warm exterior lighting. The project required extensive site preparation, and included the installation of a mat foundation to accommodate the steel and wood frame construction. Turner edges out Perkins+Will for the top spot on BD+C's Top 200 Building Team LEED APs ranking
With 1,006 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff, Turner Construction took the top spot on Building Design+Construction’s 2009 ranking of AEC firms with the most LEED APs, published as part of the Giants 300 report. Turner added more than 580 LEED APs during the past year to surpass Perkins+Will, which held the top spot four years running.

Guggenheim and Google team up on shelter design competition
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Google yesterday announced the launch of Design It: Shelter Competition, a global, online initiative that invites the public to use Google Earth and Google SketchUp to create and submit designs for virtual 3-D shelters for a location of their choice anywhere on Earth. The competition opened on June 8, 2009, in honor of Frank Lloyd Wright’s birthday, and closes to submissions on August 23.
