Mississippi county rejects adoption of state building code

Outside of Natchez, Adams County will continue to go without a building code

August 14, 2014

While it’s main city of Natchez has building codes, the areas of Adams County, Miss., outside the city limits will not adopt a state building code recently passed by the Mississippi Legislature.

The state law says that any counties that didn't have building code requirements should adopt one of three state-approved codebooks, but also included a provision that allowed counties to opt out of adopting any code. The county board of supervisors voted unanimously to opt out, leaving most of the county without any official building code.

Most of the community response to the code mandate had been negative, according to the Natchez Democrat.
