The essence that was the Loews New York hotel at its opening in 1961 is being recaptured through a $17 million renovation that harks back to the hotel's first days. The property-renamed the Metropolitan Hotel in January-features the curvilinear Miami Beach-style design of Miami architect Morris Lapidus.
The first phase of the two-phase project, completed in November, includes renovations to the hotel's Lexington Avenue façade and signage, as well as a newly designed lobby, restaurant, lobby bar, penthouse meeting room and business-class lounge. The 722-room hotel's trademark curvilinear façade of turquoise brick and teal mosaic tiles remains intact, while the west façade is painted white, alluding to its original white Carrera marble façade.
Phase two of the project, to be completed in April, involves renovation of the hotel's 260 business-class rooms.
