Clif Bar & Co.’s new 115,000-sf headquarters in Emeryville, Calif., is one of the first buildings in the state to meet the 2008 California Building Energy Efficiency Standards. The structure has the largest smart solar array in North America, which will provide nearly all of its electrical energy needs. Additional solar thermal panels will provide 70% of its hot water needs. Atrium gardens provide natural light, and recycled materials included wood from crates, railroads, and barns. Employees can enjoy the use of a 6,700-sf daycare center with a music room, playground, and kid-sized exercise equipment, as well as an expanded fitness center with a 40-foot bouldering wall, yoga room, dance room, and not one but two massage rooms (after all, this is California). ZGF Architects, Portland, Ore., was the designer, with DPR Construction, Redwood City, Calif., providing construction services.
