The design project for the Battle Building at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital required two luminous serpentine walls to infuse the main entry plaza and third floor reception area with vibrant color. Spanning ninety linear feet, the walls reach heights of sixteen and ten and a half feet.
In a design partnership with the architects, LIGHTBLOCKS developed a fire-rated material for the wall feature. The material underwent rigorous testing, receiving the required certification.
LIGHTBLOCKS handled the structural design, thermoforming, lighting schematics and construction of mock-ups to provide the concept. To guarantee a flawless installation, the LIGHTBLOCKS fabrication team worked closely with the contractor, creating precise templates to confirm field dimensions, arcs and layout. These templates guided the construction of the steel base and header, the fabrication of the support structure and the installation of the skeleton. Concurrently, panels were formed, machined, colored and finished.
LIGHTBLOCKS’ Designer is prominently featured in the two-story main lobby and throughout the seven floors of the Battle Building. The use of light and different colors on each floor creates a warm, comforting experience that helps define fun, bright and cheerful waiting areas for children and families. The product’s non-porous, fingerprint- and scratch-resistant surface makes it well-suited for healthcare and other high-traffic environments.
