Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 134: Management 101
Understanding the distinctions between leadership and management is crucial because it clarifies the roles and responsibilities of individuals within an organization. Both are necessary for an organization’s success, but they serve different purposes and require different skill sets. Effective leadership inspires and guides, while effective management ensures tasks are completed efficiently.

It happens to most people eventually. Some get there quickly, while others take a bit longer. Transitioning into a management role is a natural evolution of skill development, but that doesn’t necessarily make it any easier. Chances are you’re ready for management, but in case you’ve questions, we think we have answers. Welcome to episode 134: Management 101.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 122: Architecture and Artificial Intelligence

Even though artificial intelligence can conceptually trace its roots back to the 1950s, the reality is AI and machine learning went mainstream not too long ago. As recently as November 2022, anyone with a computer and Internet access can dip their toes in the AI waters for not much more than the time needed to understand how to make it work. Unless you’ve had your head in the sand, you probably know this is a big deal. But what does this mean to the profession of architecture? Are we all going to be replaced? Are there any ethical considerations that we should start thinking about? Welcome to Life of an Architect episode 122: Architecture and Artificial Intelligence

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 121: Material Selection

When you think of a building – whatever scale or project type – the items that go into creating that building are most frequently associated with the materials that are selected that define the appearance of the building. Brick, glass, wood, and metal are all great choices. But the decision on what to clad your project in goes a long way toward deciding things beyond the appearance.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 117: The art of architectural graphics

Architects still communicate their designs through the use of graphics – and there are a lot of different formats, mediums, and techniques that are up for consideration. Architectural graphics is always a hot topic, and if I have learned anything over the last 12 years of writing articles for Life of an Architect, it’s that sketching and architectural visualization are the hottest of topics.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 116: Are architects workaholics?

Architects work a lot, right? I mean, that’s what most people think, and it’s what you would expect to hear if you straight up asked an architect, “Do you work a lot?” Maybe it simply means that architects just like working all the time.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 115: The Art of Getting It Wrong

Architecture is not a trade, it’s a craft. And it normally takes years of practice before you start to routinely exist in the delicate balance between programming requirements and artistic expression. Since this suggests that time and evolution are a consideration to development, it also suggests that architects don’t always get it right.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 154: Networking

Today we are tackling a topic that we have never covered before, not even a little. Imagine walking into a crowded room and not knowing who to talk to or what to say, a situation I have found myself uncomfortably in more times that my therapist can ignore. The ability to build meaningful relationships and strategic alliances is a critical part of the success of any business. Today, Andrew and I will discuss a topic that at least from my side of things, have zero training in but is nonetheless a part of my job description and responsibilities in the office. Time to have a frank conversation about the indispensable practice of turning professional interactions into valuable assets. Welcome to EP 154: Networking.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 153: Inspiration

Whether your interests or skills lend themselves to design or technology, I think it is safe to say that creativity plays a role in the day-to-day experience of an architect. Sometimes you aren’t feeling it and the ideas don’t flow – which is bad. Sometimes the ideas are flowing too much, which can be worse. Either way you have to start somewhere. Welcome to EP 153: Inspiration.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 152: Starting a New Job

All around the country, new architecture school graduates are rolling up their sleeves to start their professional journey with their first “this time it counts” job. Some will be excited for this moment, some will be optimistically cautious, and then there are those who realize that this is the beginning of the end and the longest holiday they will take for the next 30 years is two weeks maximum. Andrew and I thought we could help these people ease into this phase of their lives with insightful and relevant information that could profoundly impact the trajectory of their entire lives. Welcome to EP 152: Tips for Starting a New Job.

Life of an Architect Podcast Ep. 151: Starting a Business

We are finally conceding to a request that’s been made a thousand times–-do an episode on starting an architectural business-–a topic that I have resisted for essentially six years, and I think I’ve finally broken. This is not as easy of a topic to discuss as you might think because there are a million different ways you could answer a question this broad. In an attempt to make this conversation of value, we are going to start at the beginning, and we are going to eat this whale one bit at a time.
