Washington, D.C.-based architecture and design firm CallisonRTKL has announced it will create the new global headquarters in Beijing for Lenovo Group, a Chinese multinational personal technology company. At almost 4 million square feet, the office campus will welcome 13,000 employees who previously were scattered across multiple office spaces.

The project’s overall approach involves connecting employees with the environment and establishing a strong sense of unity while meeting U.S. Green Building criteria and the China GBL 3-Star, CallisonRTKL says. The firm wants to create an office campus that is “both beautiful and green.”

The campus will comprise an expansive network of interconnected buildings spanning two adjacent parcels divided by a public street. It also will include a series of courtyards, integrating design and landscaping.

Emphasizing flexibility, well-being, and connectivity, the project’s open spaces, such as courtyards and atria, will be evenly distributed across the campus. Employees will have easy access to outdoor landscapes, service amenities, and public activities. In addition, the campus will allow unrestricted public access for use of its many areas and amenities.

The Lenovo campus adopts mixed-use principles, including lifestyle elements such as a coffee shop, bookstore, restaurant, and rock-wall climbing, in addition to a showroom, auditorium, multifunction hall, conference center, exhibition center, mobile workstations, and informal meeting spaces. Instead of internal amenities, these diverse facilities will be located at the campus perimeter and open areas.

On the building team:
Owner and developer: Lenovo Group
Design architect: Xiaoguang Liu (CallisonRTKL)
Architect of record: BIAD (Beijing Institute of Architectural Design)
MEP engineer: BIAD (Beijing Institute of Architectural Design)
Structural engineer: BIAD (Beijing Institute of Architectural Design)
General contractor/construction manager: China State Construction Engineering Corp Ltd.
