The city of Las Vegas announced it will begin a Green Building Rebate Program to stimulate new green building construction and provide energy efficiency retrofits to existing buildings.

The green building program provides rebates for new construction and existing commercial and residential retrofits for buildings who construct buildings or projects to one of the following green building program standards:
ā€¢ LEED
ā€¢ The Southern Nevada Green Building Partnership
ā€¢ Green Globes
ā€¢ NV Energy's Energy Plus New Homes program
ā€¢ NV Energy's Sure Bet Program

The rebates will be made available for expedited plans checks, building permit fees, and certifications. Additionally, the project or building will receive public recognition on the city's web site and in future promotional materials. Projects that begin after July 1, 2009 are eligible.

The application process is as follows. The builder chooses the respective green building program and notifies the city of its intent to participate. Once the project is completed, the builder requests the eligible rebates, which will be paid to the builder. The Las Vegas City Council established a special green building revenue fund so rebates will be given on a priority basis contingent upon fund availability.

Contractors expect to spend more time on prefabrication, according to FMI study

Get ready for a surge in prefabrication activity by contractors. FMI, the consulting and investment banking firm, recently polled contractors about how much time they were spending, in craft labor hours, on prefabrication for construction projects. More than 250 contractors participated in the survey, and the average response to that question was 18%. More revealing, however, was the participantsā€™ anticipation that craft hours dedicated to prefab would essentially double, to 34%, within the next five years.
