KBE Building Corp. recently received the Platinum STEP (Safety Training & Evaluation Process) Award from the national Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC).
The ABC National Environment Health & Safety Committee established the STEP program in 1989 to provide an analysis of safety and loss prevention programs, measure safety program improvements, and provide performance recognition. The STEP awards are separated into five categories: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.
The criteria for the Platinum STEP Award include:
- A total recordable incident rate 25% or more below the NAICS (North American Industrial Classification) code industry average
- A maintained Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of .800
- No OSHA cited fatalities in the previous three years
- A meeting of the minimum 20 Key Components Score
The ABC has honored KBE with either a Platinum or Gold STEP Award every year since 2003. +

Seattle unveils program to boost building efficiency
Seattle launched a new program that will help commercial property owners and managers assess and improve building energy efficiency. Under the program, all commercial and multifamily buildings larger than 10,000 sq. ft. will be measured for their energy performance using the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.

Solar installations on multifamily rooftops aid social change
The Los Angeles Business Council's study on the feasibility of installing solar panels on the city’s multifamily buildings shows there's tremendous rooftop capacity, and that a significant portion of that rooftop capacity comes from buildings in economically depressed neighborhoods. Solar installations could therefore be used to create jobs, lower utility costs, and improve conditions for residents in these neighborhood.

Southern Illinois park pavilion earns LEED Platinum
Erin’s Pavilion, a welcome and visitors center at the 80-acre Edwin Watts Southwind Park in Springfield, Ill., earned LEED Platinum. The new 16,000-sf facility, a joint project between local firm Walton and Associates Architects and the sustainability consulting firm Vertegy, based in St. Louis, serves as a community center and special needs education center, and is named for Erin Elzea, who struggled with disabilities during her life.
