More than 30 local and international professional associations and building standards organizations have formed the International Fire Safety Standards (IFSS) Coalition.
The group will develop new building fire safety standards, according to a press release from a coalition member, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Different countries have different material testing procedures, building codes, and fire-related regulations.
These differences have made developing a consistent set of fire safety standards difficult. The coalition aims to come up with a set of shared standards to establish minimum fire-safety requirements and standards for design, construction, and property management professionals.
After the group develops the new standards, it will own them, rather than any one member organization, and help with local implementation around the world. The Grenfell Tower fire has given focus to the need for a coherent set of fire safety standards, the press release says.
