HUD, New York City collaborate on research center to boost storm resilience

HUD, New York City collaborate on research center to boost storm resilience

By BD+C Staff | August 19, 2013

The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department and New York City will collaborate on a project to create a new research institute and a city-federal park at Jamaica Bay, Queens. The new Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay will research urban ecosystems and communities to help protect areas from the extreme weather many associate with climate change. One solution being explored is microgrids—localized power distribution and generation (such as with fuel cells, or through wind, or solar) that is synchronized with conventional power plants through the main power grid.
