The Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., expanded its D unit, a project that includes a 243,443-sf addition with a 12-room operating suite, a 36-bed intensive care unit, and an enlarged emergency department. Operating and patient rooms received both medical technology upgrades and energy-efficiency upgrades, including new sunshades and mechanical systems. Glass canopies at the entryways and a new brick façade and glazing update the building’s look and allow more natural light into the hospital. Gresham, Smith and Partners was the project architect with Robins and Morton serving as GC.
