Of energy and employee headaches

Aug. 11, 2010

Reynolds Metals in Richmond, Va., decided to retrofit its outdated office lighting, utilizing energy-squandering T12 fixtures. Corporate higher-ups were looking for a quick return on the investment of energy-saving technology, and employees were complaining about glare and headaches. The solution involved installing direct/indirect lighting at each workstation.

For Reynolds, the workspace challenge in the three-building, 520,000-sq.-ft. corporate headquarters actually opened up exciting new possibilities for aggressive energy-use reduction at each desk, including personal dimming, occupancy sensors, daylight dimming and facility-wide scheduling, all managed through the corporate network and the employees' computers. The personal dimming, for instance, enables employees to adjust the brightness of the fixtures over their desks simply by moving an icon on their computer screens.
