Walter P Moore served as lead structural engineer and engineer-of-record for the project. Lucas Oil Stadium’s innovative moving roof has engineering “firsts”: It is the first movable roof with panels that slide open lengthwise. As they travel up a steeply inclined roof, each panel is supported on five parallel rails, and a “winding spool” technology reclaims energy as the roof moves. A unique linkage mechanism ensures the panels will not bind or wear. A custom weather sealing system protects the roofs perimeter. Additionally, Lucas Oil Stadium had North America’s largest moving glass window wall.
An international engineering and consulting firm, Walter P Moore creates solutions that help clients turn their ideas into structures and infrastructures that work. Founded in 1931, Walter P Moore is consistently recognized for great client service, engineering excellence and as a “best place to work.”
The Engineering Excellence Awards competition has been held by the Texas Council of Engineering Companies since its inception in 1975 to honor and recognize outstanding achievements within the engineering community. The distinguished panel of judges selected 12 Gold Medal and 7 Silver Medal winning projects based on uniqueness, originality, technical value to the engineering profession, complexity and how successfully the project met the needs of the client.
