The American Institute of Steel Construction has designated September 18, 2009, as the first annual Steel Day in the U.S. More than 80 events highlighting the value of steel construction have already been planned in 32 states, according to Chris Moor, AISC director of industry mobilization.
“This is an opportunity for people to see how the structural steel industry operates, ask questions, and learn about our processes,” said Moor, speaking to media representatives at NASCC The Steel Conference, in Phoenix.
A typical event might be an open house at a steel fabricator plant, with a tour and education program for visitors, particularly for architects, engineers, and contractors. Moor said a key focus of Steel Day (www.SteelDay.org) will be the steel construction industry’s contribution to sustainable design and construction.
