NORTHBROOK, Ill., January 26, 2009 – Underwriters Laboratories, a world leader in product safety testing services, today launched a new wholly-owned subsidiary, UL Environment Inc. UL Environment Inc., which will operate under one of five new UL operating units announced in early January, was created in response to the increase demand for environmentally sustainable products. UL Environment Inc.’s services will help industries and the public make sense of "green" claims while helping manufacturers maintain transparency and credibility in the marketplace.
“UL Environment Inc. will leverage UL’s strong reputation as a leading third-party testing organization with a 115-year history to help manufacturers turn eco claims into a competitive advantage,” said Steve Wenc, President, UL Environment Inc. “These environmental services will turn the promise of more sustainable products and processes into a reality for our partners.”
UL Environment Inc.’s services include two new offerings—Environmental Claims Validation (ECV), a program that tests and validates manufacturer’s environmental claims, and a soon-to-be-released certification program that will test and certify products to industry-accepted environmental standards. In late 2009, the organization plans to expand with additional services.
“We expect demand for ‘green’ product testing to be high, especially given the prevalence of environmentally-driven products on the market today,” said Marcello Manca, Vice President and General Manager, UL Environment Inc. “Until now, many businesses have struggled with how to maximize the economic potential of their sustainably-driven innovations. UL Environment Inc. is responding with offerings that will make a difference in our partners’ bottom lines.”
