Structural steel building projects earn national awards at AISC 2009 Steel Conference

Eleven building projects employing structural steel have been honored by the American Institute of Steel Construction at AISC’s 2009 Steel Conference in Phoenix.

The 2009 Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel awards, known as IDEAS2, recognize outstanding achievements in engineering and architecture on structural steel projects in the U.S.

The honorees are:

Projects less than $15 million:
• Armstrong Oil & Gas, Denver (National Award) – Submitted by Lake/Flato Architects
• Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine, University of Maine, Augusta (Merit Award) – Submitted by Simpson Gumpertz & Heger
•  Raymond and Susan Brochstein Pavilion, Houston (Merit) – Rice University
• Museum of Flight, T. Evans Wyckoff Memorial Bridge, Seattle (Merit) – SB SRG Partnership

Projects $15 million to $75 million:
• Pool/Ice Rink at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, N.Y. (National) – Submitted by Geiger Engineers
• Arizona State University Polytechnic Classroom Buildings, Mesa (Merit) – Submitted by Lake/Flato Architects

Projects greater than $75 million:
• Bank of Oklahoma Center, Tulsa (National) – Submitted by Thornton Tomasetti
• California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco (Merit) – Submitted by Arup
• Swedish Orthopedic Institute, Seattle (Merit) – Submitted by Lund & Everton
• University of Illinois Memorial Stadium, Champaign (Merit) – Submitted by HNTB Architects

Presidential Award of Excellence – Structural Engineering:
• The Addition at 185 Berry Street, San Francisco – Submitted by Simpson Gumpertz & Heger
