China firm Selects MulvannyG2 to Design Technology Park

MulvannyG2 Architecture announced recently that it has been awarded the 64-acre Huawei Beijing Environmental Technology Park project by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.  Huawei Technologies is China ’s largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment.  The 2.2 million sf research and development corporate campus in Beijing is the largest single-tenant project awarded to MulvannyG2 in 35 years of practice. 

 The Bellevue-based firm will provide master planning, landscaping and building design for the high-tech campus with special focus on restoring and protecting the surrounding environment. 

 “Our ability to provide design solutions that integrate our know-how in sustainable design, high-tech research park design, and understanding of Chinese culture was a key factor in being selected by Huawei Technologies,” said Ming Zhang, MulvannyG2’s Senior Partner and Design Director.

Other firms competing for the project include: GMP, HOK, and Terry Farrel and Partners from Germany,U.S.and theU.K.respectively.  Currently in the schematic design phase, MulvannyG2’s design team envisions the technology park will comprise facilities for a research and development center, and an employee activity center in Phase I of the master plan.  The planning and landscaping concept is inspired by traditional Chinese culture includingBeijingcourtyard houses and time-honored gardens. Native plant species will be replaced to create a terrestrial and aquatic environment.  Phase I of the project is scheduled for completion in 2010.

This year, MulvannyG2 is celebrating a decade of success in China . MulvannyG2’s journey in China began in 1996 when the firm won an international competition to design the China Construction Bank in Xiamen .   Today the firm has 40 projects in 26 cities in China

The firm recently completed three other milestone projects, the second phase of the 118-acre Zhangjiang Semiconductor Park in Shanghai , the Shanghai Fudan University Crowne Plaza Hotel and Fujian Provincial Electric and Power Company headquarters building in Fuzhou .  MulvannyG2 has other projects on the boards in cities such as Nanjing , Hangzhou , and Beijing .

Last year, MulvannyG2 was selected as one of the top 20 most influential architectural firms inChinaat the 2006 China Landmark Summit inBeijing.  Ming Zhang, Senior Partner, MulvannyG2, was also recognized amongChina’s top 20 most influential designers.
