The United States Postal Service (USPS) has decided to delay construction of a $70-million to $90-million mail processing and distribution center in Oak Creek (metropolitan Milwaukee), WI.
The project was put on hold as part of the USPS’ nationwide moratorium on non-essential construction, which was brought on by the recent steep slide in the U.S. economy.
Marge Oehlke, spokesperson for the USPS in Milwaukee, said that the Postal Service began looking at sites for a new processing and distribution center about 10 years ago.
It had just completed purchasing the 64-acre site at South Pennsylvania and West College avenues in Oak Creek in January.
The planned building would stand one to two stories high and cover between 770,000 and 870,000 square feet.
Construction was tentatively planned to begin in March of this year, with completion scheduled for 2011.
According to Oehlke, USPS Headquarters in Washington, DC, will decide when to start construction based on when the U.S. economy recovers sufficiently, and on the USPS’ future needs.
