Construction has been completed on the new $16.8 million Centennial Hills Library in the northwest section of Las Vegas.

URS Corporation provided construction management services for the project as part of an ongoing contract with the Las Vegas Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) for construction management for two new libraries and the modernization of 10 existing libraries. URS services included project and construction management, cost estimating, schedule analysis, quality assurance review, value engineering, and construction reviews. The architect for the project was JMA Architecture Studios.

In addition to a 32,431-square-foot library, the 45,555-square-foot Centennial Hills facility houses a state-of-the-art book and media management system. Additional space has been built-out for future expansion of the library to meet the needs of the growing community. LVCCLD is seeking LEED Silver Certification for the library.

The second new facility—the $48 million Southwest Library and Service Center—has been designed and is currently under government plan review, with construction scheduled to begin in June 2009 and completion expected in early 2011. It includes a single-story library, a two-story service center, and a 300-seat auditorium. The service center will contain LVCCLD administrative offices, public services support functions, general storage and processing/mail distribution facilities, as well as loading docks and truck fleet parking facilities.

Ten additional libraries in the district are being modernized to incorporate technology to automate the process of checking books in and out and for the installation of automated sorting equipment to distribute books and other library materials to other libraries or back to the library’s collection.
