The Federal Emergency Management Agency is preparing to end one of its biggest disaster adaptation programs, according to reporting by Grist.
The Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program funnels billions of dollars to state and local communities for preparation for natural disasters. The program funds projects such as burying power lines, building culverts, protecting wastewater facilities from being inundated by flooding, and upgrading power stations.
If the program is halted, jurisdictions will not be able to apply for grants for fiscal year 2024 that were made available in January. Projects that have been selected in past years but not yet disbursed will not receive payment.
Partially completed projects will be scrutinized and reviewed. The program’s emphasis on equity may be the cause of its expected phasing out, Grist reported.
