The department secretaries said they will launch the Joint Task Force on Federal Land for Housing to locate underutilized lands for residential development and to streamline the process to transfer federally owned land for housing development. The Interior Department is the caretaker for more than 500 million acres and the department says much of it is suitable for residential construction.
The two secretaries say they will look to cut red tape so that residential development on federal land isn’t excessively burdened with environmental reviews, transfer protocols, and other matters. Housing affordability was a top issue for voters last year.
Both President Trump and Kamala Harris addressed the affordable housing issue during the campaign.
