Indoor farms are another option for office conversions
Office-to-farm conversions not only provide a new purpose for empty buildings, but they also address another challenge that came to light during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Office-to-farm conversions have taken hold in recent months, according to a BBC report. One floor of a 32-story historic Niels Esperson building in Houston, Texas, is undergoing a conversion to a farm. Another project is transforming a 200,000 sf facility inside a former commercial building in Florence, Ky., into a vertical farm.
Benefits of Office-to-Farm Conversions
Office-to-farm conversions not only provide a new purpose for empty buildings, but they also address another challenge that came to light during the Covid-19 pandemic. Disruptions to the food supply chain during that time highlighted a need for local sources of produce.
This alternative use for office buildings holds an advantage over another option—residential conversions. Open plans in most modern offices, or warehouses, can be easier to convert for indoor farm use than for residential use because vertical farms don’t need to be partitioned.
