AIA objects to Trump rule on new policy for procuring designs for federal buildings

Trump also orders classical architecture styles for transit and infrastructure.

Two executive orders signed by President Trump will impact designs for new federal buildings.

The President issued a similar order during his first term that calls for classical design on new construction. The results include a neoclassical federal courthouse that will soon open in Huntsville, Ala.

Trump’s order requires the administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration to work with various agencies to develop a new policy for procuring designs for federal buildings. GSA’s existing guiding principles for federal architecture were enacted in 1962 to discourage an official government building aesthetic. A Trump insider said the change in policy will extend to transit and infrastructure funded by the federal government.

Trump’s order drew opposition from the American Institute of Architects, which expressed “strong concerns that mandating architecture styles stifles innovation and harms local communities.”
