Law requiring New York contractors to register with Dept. of Labor goes into effect
By Peter Fabris, Contributing Editor
A new law in New York State that affects contractors and subcontractors that work on public and some private construction projects goes into effect Dec. 30, 2024.
Contractors and sub-contractors must register with the state’s Department of Labor before submitting any new bids or beginning work on a covered project on or after December 30. The new law is intended to prevent employers from exploiting construction workers, according to state officials.
Contractors and sub-contractors must apply through the department’s Contractor Registry Portal via the Management System for Protecting Worker Rights. All applications must be submitted online and fees paid by credit card.
If approved, companies will receive a Certificate of Registration electronically. Registration is good for two years from the date of issuance.
Contractors and sub-contractors must renew at least 90 days before their current registration expires.
